Definition

Volley ball is an amusing team sport played in indoor and outdoor stadiums by two teams of 6 players each by striking a ball with hands over a net stretched in the middle of the court. The dimensions of the court are 60 feet in length and 30 feet in width; and the net is elevated to 8 feet.

History

The game was originated in the USA by choosing some of the characteristics in tennis and hand ball. It was less strenuous compared to sports like tennis and basket ball. The game soon became popular across the world while the Japan and the Asian countries were prevailing. Later many countries started off this game and eventually, it was included at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964.

How to play?

The objective of the sport is to strike the ball with hands over the net such that the opponent’s team cannot make a valid return. A new rule has been adopted since few decades that the ball can be moreover stricken with legs or any part of the body. Some of the illegal plays not to be followed are:

  1. The ball should not be held, carried or lifted with the palm of the hands.
  2. The team is not supposed to take more than three touches and two repeated touches by a player.
  3. Touching/contacting the net is another illegal play.
