Definition

Basket ball is a sport played by two teams of 5 players each. The objective of the sport is to score maximum points by throwing the ball into a hoop elevated 10feet from the ground. The hoop will be at each end of the playing court. It is one of the most popular sports across the globe. The game is played in both outdoor and indoor stadiums.

How to play?

The player has to dribble the ball on the court towards the hoop or he should pass the ball to one of the teammates without carrying more than one step of walking/running.

History

The game was discovered by an European man named Jim Naismith. Initially, the game was played with a soccer ball and a peach basket of 2 numbers. Later, the game spreaded to many colleges and universities where the first basket ball leagues conducted. As soon as the sport gained popularity in the country, the association intended to form professional leagues. Thus, it became an Olympic sport in 1936.

Points system

  • The team will be awarded 3 points when the player makes a field goal from beyond the three-point line on the court & 2 points within the three-point line.
  • 1 point is awarded for free throws.
