Melbourne Women in Film Festival 2018

February 22, 2018 - February 25, 2018

Showcasing the many talented women in the film industry

The Melbourne Women in Film Festival 2018 presents films and talks by Australian women. This year, you’ll be privy to the independent spirit of Australian women’s filmmaking and their creativity across the board of film and music. Just 4 days long, Melbournians will be treated to Aussie dramas, comedies, documentaries, retrospectives and music-inspired films.
Screenings are from 22 – 25 February 2018 at ACMI (Federation Square, Cnr Swanston & Flinders Street), Hoyts Melbourne Central (Swanston St and Latrobe St) and RMIT University (445 Swanston St) – Melbourne. Check the program, from which you can purchase tickets via the links.
Co-presenting with Monash University, you’ll hear from inspiring, established and emerging filmmakers in Q&A sessions, forums, and panel discussion. There’ll also be a public forum on women working across screen and music.
Highlights of the Festival are the Opening Night screening of Love Serenade, feature film Don’t Tell, and a special Music in Motion session featuring One Night the Moon and The Was. The documentary The Silences featuring a Q&A with filmmaker Margot Nash; short film screenings, budget filmmaking forum; and a panel exploring gender division in screen and music industries are other highlights of the festival. Sophie Mathisen’s crowd-funded feature debut Drama is the Closing Night event, followed by the festival’s inaugural shorts awards and celebrations.
Opening Night film Love Serenade is a 101 min film starring the wonderful Miranda Otto. It captures catastrophic events resulting from two women competing for the affection of a smooth talking DJ. Featuring an all-female creative team, it won the Camera d’or at the 1996 Cannes Film Fest and was nominated for 2 AFI Awards. At the ‘after party’ following this opening night film, you can send your own messages of love while chilling to some smooth tunes and a few drinks.
Drama, the closing night film follows Anna who is having a hard time since her split from John. She travels to Paris and her best friend Jean, and devotes herself to another task entirely. Your ticket to the closing night event includes entry into the Shorts Awards presentation and afterparty. A feast for the senses, there’ll be 3 sessions of shorts, showcasing an exceptional series of short films made by Australian women in 2 of the sessions and Australian women students in the 3rd, that go across the narrative to animation and documentary. See here for other special events and Q&A sessions. Be entertained and check out the powerhouse of women, heading this Festival.
